Every water level controller has two halves: a sensor on the tank and a controller that switches the pump. The question is how the two talk to each other — over a cable, or over the air.
Wired controllers
A cable runs from the sensor in the tank to the controller beside the pump.
Good for:
- A sump or ground-level tank close to the pump.
- A short, protected cable route, for example inside a duct.
What to watch for:
- Distance. An overhead tank three floors up needs a long cable down the building, through walls or along the outside.
- Weather. A cable on a terrace spends years in sun and rain. It is usually the first part to fail.
- Installation. Running and fixing the cable is most of the installation work.
Wireless controllers
The sensor on the tank sends the level to the controller over radio. Nothing runs between them.
Good for:
- Overhead tanks on the terrace.
- Houses where a cable route would mean drilling or chasing walls.
What to watch for:
- Power for the sensor. With no cable, the sensor needs its own power: a rechargeable battery, or a battery kept charged by a small solar panel.
- Radio reach. Thick concrete between the tank and the controller weakens the signal. A site check before installation settles it.
Solar or adapter?
| Tank location | Choose |
|---|---|
| Terrace, no power point | Solar kit |
| Power socket near the tank | USB kit (adapter + 10 ft cable) |
Does the controller still work without internet?
It should. The pump decision belongs on the controller at your home, not in an app or a cloud server. Check this before you buy: if the controller needs the internet to switch the pump, an outage leaves you with an overflowing — or empty — tank. The Nexomatic controller keeps filling and stopping on its own; only the phone view and alerts wait for the connection. More on that in smart home that works without internet.
